CFL Popularity on the Rise
For decades, the Canadian Football League was overshadowed by the popularity of the NFL -- even in its home country.
But
those days may be over. According to a recent national survey in
Canada, the CFL is now the league of choice among Canadians.
The
June 2006 popularity poll, conducted by a University of Lethbridge
sociology professor, found that the CFL is the preeminent professional
football league in the country -- in fact, Canadians prefer the CFL
over the NFL, 19 percent to 13 percent, it stated.
And after an
exciting down-to-the-wire thriller between the Edmonton Eskimos and the
Montreal Alouettes in the 2005 Grey Cup -- the CFL championship game --
the league’s outlook in 2006 is even more optimistic than ever before.
Adding to the publicity of the new season is embattled NFL superstar
Ricky Williams’ signing with the Toronto Argonauts.
