Martial Arts Overview
Concentration. Precision. Discipline. These are just a few of the
fundamental principles in which martial arts are rooted. Dating back to
ancient times, martial arts consist of a uniform code of practices,
traditions and methods of training used for combat, primarily
self-defense. Many styles incorporate the use of weapons; while others
strictly employ an “empty-hand” approach.
The Asian styles of martial arts are among the most popular in the
world. For example, Karate (which has many subdivisions, including
Kempo, Shotokan, Shotokai, etc.) originates from Japan; Kung Fu or
“Wushu” (which also several subdivisions, such as Shaolin, Wing Chun,
etc.) stem from China; and Tae Kwon Do comes from Korea. In addition,
other forms of martial arts from different parts of Asia are still
practiced today. Thailand’s Muay Thai spawned the contemporary sport of
kickboxing, and the Filipino art of Eskrima, which utilizes blades and
short sticks, continues to be taught across the globe.
However, the development of martial arts extended far beyond the
reach of Asia. Early forms of boxing and wrestling were competitive
events during the ancient Olympic games in Greece. Savate is a
centuries-old French variation of kickboxing that blends street
fighting techniques with boxing. And in the Americas, capoeira is a
unique martial art that is native to Brazil.
