The Musical Experience
Musical theatre works, usually referred to as "musicals", are performed around the world. They may be presented in large venues, such as big budget West End and Broadway theatre productions in London and New York City, or in smaller Off-Broadway or regional productions, on tour, or by amateur groups in schools, theatres and other performance spaces. In addition to Britain and the U.S., there are vibrant musical theatre scenes in Germany, Austria, Philippines, France, Canada, Japan, Eastern Europe, Australia, and other countries.
From Gershwin to Avenue Q, some of the greatest works in American musical theater can be found on New York’s Great White Way -- Broadway. Revivals of great classics such as A Chorus Line, to the new “jukebox” musicals like Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia, make up the current musical landscape at the heart of New York City’s theatre district.
Many great names in music have spent considerable time on Broadway: George and Ira Gershwin, Lorenz and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, and Bernstein. Plenty of laughs can also be found in Broadway musicals, as fans of The Producers and Monty Python’s Spamalot can attest.
Smaller off-Broadway productions are also popular, such as Stomp and Altar Boyz. In some instances, an off-Broadway production will become so popular that it moves to Broadway -- Rent and Avenue Q both did this. Of course, new productions are always coming; look for Mary Poppins and Legally Blonde to open in the coming months!
